RIP John Barry

The world must say goodbye to this genius. A quote to lighten the mood:

'The driver, in order not to hit the car, would like the car moved.'

RIP John Barry.

This is a video of Mr. Barry conducting one of his many masterpieces. I doubt this piece needs any introduction!

Quote Of The Day!

Stole this off Millie...again.

'My mother's friend viewed the episode and was quick to call. "I hope when you did the show you were watching Martin Landau. Now, there's a great actor. You can learn from him. He was more like you than you!"'

Friday 28 January 2011

I must confirm that the Bradford Blogathon is still on! So YAY! I'm just going to be on and off tonight, because I'm sleep deprived, and a post would probably turn out to be just a bunch of random words jumbled together. Like this. So goodnight and see you tomorrow!

Thursday 27 January 2011

Quote Of The Day!

I don't know whether the Bradford blogathon is over yet! But here's a quote from Audrey.

'I heard a definition once: Happiness is health and a short memory! I wish I'd invented it, because it is very true.'

Wednesday 26 January 2011

Quote Of The Day (and Happy Birthday Paul Newman)!

Sorry! Brad's getting deserted today! Happy birthday, Paul!

'If you don't have enemies, you don't have character.'

Tuesday 25 January 2011

Quote Of The Day!

This is from the 1959 movie Compulsion. Brad plays the villain, Arthur Straus.

'Crime. Oh, my wealthy fraternity brothers. 67 dollars, and a second-hand typewriter.'

Random Facts About The Dill Man!

This isn't stalkerish at all!

  1. Bradford Dillman was born 14th April 1930.
  2. He is exactly 6 feet tall-I thought no-one was supposed to be this height? I'VE BEEN LIED TO!
  3. He attended Yale University, and graduated with a BA in English Literature (good man. I am a bookworm, after all!).
  4. He served the US Marines.
  5. He made his acting debut in 1953, in a production of 'The Scarecrow'.
  6. His daughter, Pamela Dillman, is a known actress, narrator, director and acting teacher.
  7. Dillman is a huge football fan (he wrote a book called 'Inside The New York Giants' in 1995).
  8. Bradford wrote his autobiography 'Are You Somebody: An Actor's Life' in 1997.
This is totally pointless, but it was fun (isn't that all that matters?)!

PS-I found all these facts on IMDb. IMDb, you are a saviour.

I love this photo. So I'm just going to keep posting it.

Quote Of The Day!

THE BLOGATHON HAS BEEN EXTENDED! I also stole this quote off Millie-please forgive me!

'My mother had a friend who was never convinced I had talent. Being close to the family, she worried that one day I'd be found out and never work again, leaving my children to starve.'

What an awful family friend!
Old(er) Brad!

Sunday 23 January 2011

Quote Of The Day!

From Brad! I'm finding it awfully hard to find Dillman quotes...

'I prefer to have longevity. I like as great a variety as possible, hopefully to avoid getting stuck in one kind of character, having to do it over and over again. I seek to challenge myself as an actor -- and at the same time support my family.'

Brad, a dodgy moustache and a silly face. This is what I have resorted to.

Saturday 22 January 2011

Quote Of The Day!

Bradford Dillman summarizes his life.

'I've had a wonderful life. I married the most beautiful woman in the world. Together we raised six children, each remarkable in his or her own way and every one a responsible citizen. I was fortunate to work in a profession where I looked forward to going to work every day. I was rewarded with modest success. The work sent me to places all over the world I'd never been able to afford visiting otherwise. I keep busy and I'm happy. And there are a few good films out there that I might be remembered for.'

I apologise, I'm running out of Brad photos

Friday 21 January 2011

The Dill Man And Suzy Parker!

I only recently discovered Brad was married to Suzy.

I really don't know how this went unnoticed. You know, someone probably had told me before, and it seeped through my brain, like many things do. I have a head like a sieve. I really do.

Well, my belated congratulations to Bradford and Suzy! My EXTREMELY belated congratulations!

PS-I had planned on writing a post on Dillman's wonderful evil smiles, BUT I CAN'T FIND ANY SCREENCAPS! This is disgraceful. If anyone can help, I would be very grateful! *hint, hint*

Quote Of The Day!

Hey, it's the Bradford Dillman blogathon-this quote is going to be from Dillman!

'My feeling is that you should try to do the things you enjoy most in life. I chose acting as a career because I enjoyed it then as I do now. The only question for me then was, "Can I make a living at it?"'

Bradford Dillman: Almost The Man, But Gregory Peck Beat Him To It

The Bradford Dillman biography, as made by Millie and I!

This is so happening. This WILL be written. Just you wait and see.

Available from all good book stores in the near future.

Quote Of The Day!

'Bradford Dillman sounded like a distinguished, phoney, theatrical name - so I kept it.'

Welcome to the Bradford Dillman blogathon! Look forward to random posts from Millie, me and maybe a few other people too!

Evil Songs-Que Sera Sera

This song! Oh my gosh! The last watched The Man Who Knew Too Much in July...AND THIS SONG IS STILL STUCK IN MY HEAD! It's ridiculous. Really ridiculous. I'll never escape it. Never ever.

(The way Doris sings it in the movie is just hilarious though, isn't it?)

Quote Of The Day (and Happy Birthday, Archie Leach and Danny Kaye)!

Well, this quote is from the brilliant Archie Leach:

'Ah, beware of snobbery; it is the unwelcome recognition of one's own past failings.'

Ugh, he's so Cary Grant.

We mustn't forget, though, that it is also Danny Kaye's birthday. So happy birthday, Danny!

Evil Songs-Why Do Fools Fall In Love

I love this song, with all my heart. It's so bouncy and bubbly and romantic...and extremely catchy. Emphasis on the 'extremely'.

I start singing it. Soon my mum's singing it. Then my brother. Then my dad (attempts) singing it (sorry, Daddy!). IT'S CONTAGIOUS! That's the only word for it. Contagious.

Give it a will get it stuck in your head!

I'm also, ahem, partial to this version of the song (and partial in Niamhy speak literally translates as I AM HEAD OVER HEELS IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG AND THE ARTISTS ARE SO AMAZINGLY AWESOME IT IS ACTUALLY UNREAL!).

PS-Once again, I have no idea why this video is so huge, but who doesn't want to see The Overtones in full screen, eh?

Quote Of The Day!

From the one, the only CHARLIE CHAPLIN!

'A day without laughter is a day wasted.'

Evil Songs-Dream Lover

I love this song. But it is truly evil. Complete evil. Sheer evilness.
Bobby knew what he was doing. He set out to write a song that would eat it's way into your brain. AND STAY THERE.
Listen...and try to escape the wonderfulness and evilness that is Dream Lover!

PS-How young and adorable is Bobby in this? AW!

PPS-Shoot. I just realised something. Millie posted something like this a LONG time ago. SORRY MILLIE! THIS WAS TOTALLY UNINTENTIONAL!

Quote Of The Day!

RIP Susannah York.

'I usually find that actors are rather interested people. It`s part of our profession. It all starts with curiosity about other human beings. The best actors have that kind of interest in people and in life.'

Saturday 15 January 2011

Quote Of The Day!

From the genius that is Frank Capra!

'A hunch is creativity trying to tell you something.'

Thursday 13 January 2011

Quote Of The Day!

From Ida Lupino:

'I'd love to see more women working as directors and producers. Today it's almost impossible to do it unless you are an actress or writer with power...I wouldn't hesitate right this minute to hire a talented woman if the subject matter were right.'

Evil Songs-Ain't That A Kick In The Head

I apologise in advance to Raquelle!

Gah! This song won't leave me alone! It's always there, somewhere in the back of my mind, ready to attack when least expected. And you can bet your bottom dollar it will.
I love this part of Ocean's 11. It's actually pretty random-they're all just planning and scheming and the next minute-'Oh, look! Dino's singing!' I adore that about classic movies. The stars got using ALL their talents in a movie, even if it wasn't relevant to the story. Example A of this is just above.

And did I mention Dean looks unbelievably cool here? Just thought I should say that.

PS-Sorry the video is huge. I'm not good with this sort of thing.

Quote Of The Day!

This from Jack Palance.

'I go to see maybe seven films a year at the most, and since I only go to see the best, it follows that I very rarely see my own.'

My New Series!

Yay! I'm actually going to start posting again! About evil songs! Yay!

This new series is basically for me to try and get songs out of my head and into your head instead. Sorry! BUT IT MUST BE DONE!

So, this will start tomorrow. I'm looking forward to venting my troubles...and evil songs.

PS-Sorry for the really random post.

Quote Of The Day!

From the lovely Coco Chanel!

'Don't spend time beating on a wall, hoping to transform it into a door.'

I like it.

Monday 10 January 2011

Quote Of The Day!

Ivor Novello was such a quotable person! And, as you can probably guess, I LOVE HIM!

'Things which do not require effort of some sort are seldom worth having.'

Sorry for the lack of in-depth posts. Have been getting ready to get back to school, and now I'm back at school, so it's work, work, work! But don't worry, I'll be back to proper posting possibly tomorrow!

Sunday 9 January 2011

Quote Of The Day (and Happy Birthday, Gracie Fields)!

Happy Birthday, Gracie!

'My work has meant travelling the world over, to great places and small, but home to me always means Rochdale and its gradely folk.'

Saturday 8 January 2011

Happy Birthday Elvis Presley!

To celebrate Elvis' birthday, here's Return To Sender, one of my favourite Elvis songs. Hope you enjoy it!

Oh. No.

It's stuck in my head.

Quote Of The Day (And Happy Birthday, Elvis)!

'I knew by heart all the dialogue of James Dean's films; I could watch Rebel Without a Cause a hundred times over.'

Quote Of The Day!

This is from the little girl with the ringlets, Shirley Temple.

'Good luck needs no explanation.'

I think I prefer her as a teen. Little less 'creepy little girl'.

RIP Pete Postlethwaite and Anne Francis

The world of cinema has had to say goodbye to two wonderful talents. May they both rest in peace.

Pete Postlethwaite

Quote Of The Day (and Happy Birthday, Ray Milland)!

'The greatest drawback in making pictures is the fact that film makers have to eat.'

Quote Of The Day!

Some advice from Donna Reed!

'When you handle yourself, use your head; when you handle others, use your heart.'

Saturday 1 January 2011

Quote Of The Day (and Happy Birthday, Dana Andrews)!

Happy birthday Dana!

(after having received 'permission' from Samuel Goldwyn to get married) 'About a week before the wedding was planned I got a call from the casting director: "Let your hair and your beard grow. You're going to be in a western". So in the society column of the Santa Monica paper there was a picture of the two of us, me with this beard, and it said, "Mr. Andrews is an actor. Note the beard."'
