Quote Of The Day!

One to lighten the mood from the very recently late, great Tony Curtis.

'I wouldn't be caught dead marrying a woman old enough to be my wife.'

RIP Tony.

Quote Of The Day!

BOGIE!!! Hmm...being incredibly soppy. It's a side to Humphrey I don't know!

'I was born when you kissed me. I died when you left me. I lived a few weeks while you loved me.'

Quote Of The Day!

One from the delightful Claudette Colbert!

'Why do grandparents and grandchildren get along so well? They have the same enemy-the mother.'

(I'm in a Claudette/Clark mood after It Happened One Night!)

RIP Gloria Stuart

What a gorgeous and talented lady. And imagine living to be 100 years old! Rest in peace, my dear. You will be missed.

Quote Of The Day!

Archie Leach talking like Cary Grant!

'My formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and go to bed at night. In between, I occupy myself as best I can.'

Archie Leach couldn't possibly sound this cool. He must have been playing Cary!

Niamhy Finally Likes Clark Gable Day!

A miracle has occurred! I finally like Clark Gable! Clark and I haven't had a very good relationship. And it all began when I was seven years old...
This is another one of these 'Watching Movies From Granny's Time' stories. I was sitting cross-legged on the floor in front of of the TV, watching TCM, eagerly anticipating a movie I knew would make a lasting impact on me; my first epic: Gone With The Wind.

Well, I sat cross-legged on that wooden floor for four hours. Not even the ice-cream van nor bouts of pins and needles forced me to move. I was determined to like this movie! I simply had to like it! I was not a classic movie fan unless I liked it!
But it was no use. I LOATHED it! There were so many things I found wrong with it-the unnecessary, bum-numbing length, the melodrama, Vivien Leigh's character...there are too many reasons!
I vowed never to watch the movie again. And I have kept that promise so far. I would like to attempt to watch it one more time, to see if aging has made a difference, but I just can't bring myself to do it! I even attempted reading the book (and I am a bookworm!), but I gave up. I just think me and Gone With The Wind aren't meant to be.
Well, that was the end of my acquaintance with Mr. Gable. Until now.

Last week I was in my room, attempting to perfect my 60's eye make-up, when my brother came in, shoved a DVD into my hands and walked back out again. It was It Happened One Night. I only got a chance to watch it today-AND I AM TOTALLY AND UTTERLY HEAD OVER HEELS IN LOVE WITH IT!!!
By gad, this movie is fantastic! The story is wonderful, the acting enchanting, the script is hilarious-you simply can not praise it enough!
And Clark and Claudette have such wonderful chemistry in it. Their love for each other is so believable-if the 4 year old Niamhy was watching it she probably would have thought they actually were in love!

So, finally, after many long years, the feud is over! NIAMHY FINALLY LIKES CLARKE GABLE!

(By the way, to all GWTW fans: I am very sorry, I just don't like your masterpiece. Simply my opinion! Please don't throw rocks at me!)

Quote Of The Day!

Hey, everybody! It's 'Niamhy Finally Likes Clark Gable Day'! So how's about a quote from him and a post in celebration of this miracle a little later?

'The things a man has to have are hope and confidence in himself against all odds, and sometimes he needs somebody, his pal, or his mother, or his wife or God, to give him that confidence. He's got to have some inner standards worth fighting for or there won't be any way to bring him conflict. And he must be ready to choose death before dishonour without making too much song or dance about it. That's all there is to it.'

Let me add, I have no idea what is wrong with my blog today! The font is sort of, well, messed up! But I must post!

Quote Of The Day!

I love this one from Doris!

'Wrinkles are hereditary. Parents get them from their children.'

Friday 24 September 2010

Happy Birthday, Jim Henson and F. Scott Fitzgerald!

A doubly-whammy! Whoa! Both geniuses, too!
Happy birthday to Jim Henson, the genius behind The Muppets!

And happy birthday to F. Scott Fitzgerald, the genius behind The Great Gatsby (one of the best books I've ever read!), Tales Of The Jazz Age, Bernice Bobs Her Hair, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and other such wonderful stories!

RIP Eddie Fisher

You will be missed!

I find it kind of sad that a talented person like Eddie is mostly remembered for being married to Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor, and being Carrie Fisher's father, don't you?

Quote Of The Day!

One from the one and only Peckman! Three guesses as to why I picked this one!

'I had that stubborn streak, the Irish in me I guess.'

Don't you just love it? Now I'm going to go round and tell everyone that I'm related to Gregory Peck (every Irish person is related some way or another)!

Thursday 23 September 2010

Happy Birthday, Mickey Rooney!

Happy 90th birthday to the wonderful Mr. Rooney! It's funny-I've seen a few of Mickey's movies, but the only one I can ever remember is his role in Breakfast At Tiffany's, which is probably the most politically incorrect and annoying character ever!

And how sweet is this image?! These are the days when I really wish I was a teenager in those times...

Quote Of The Day!

No-one else think this is rather poignant coming from Natalie Wood? Rather sad...or bittersweet in a way.

'At night, when the sky is full of stars and the sea is still you get the wonderful sensation that you are floating in space.'

Gosh darn it! Not a moustache in sight!

Wednesday 22 September 2010

Quote Of The Day!

Orson Welles is just way too cool and awesome for words. The guy is smooth. Only he could come up with this:

'When you are down and out something always turns up - and it is usually the noses of your friends.'

Oh my gosh...THE ORSON WELLES 'TASH!!!

The Men With The Moustaches!

I heart moustaches. I don't know what it is about them, but I love them! Well, that is, on vintage men (modern day men...I'm not so sure!). They are the epitome of coolness. So, to celebrate the wonderful face fuzz here are some men who totally rock the 'tash!

1. Laurence Olivier-This man has the most amazing moustache ever! You simply can't take your eyes off it!

2. Michael Redgrave-This moustache makes me laugh! I don't know what it is about it; it's just so comical! Every time he appeared on screen in 'The Lady Vanishes' I just burst into fits of giggles! But I do love it!

3. Biggles-So technically his moustache wasn't real. Neither was he. But it is pretty damn cool!

4. Groucho Marx-Another non-existing moustache. But you can't have a cool moustache list without it!

5. Sammy Davis Jr- People think it was the singing, the dancing and the charisma that made Mr. Bojangles a hit. It wasn't. It was the moustache.

6.  Hercule Poirot-If I was a man I would grow a moustache like this.

7. Salvador Dali-I wonder how long it took him to style it in the mornings?

8. Charlie Chaplin-Possibly the most iconic moustache there is. There is actually a t-shirt of his moustache!

9. Albert Einstein-Once again, it was not the brain that made him smart. It was the moustache!

10. Bobby Darin-This is a silly moustache. A really silly moustache. But I honestly do think Bobby would still be adorable if he had a Dumbledore beard down to his ankles!

I seriously don't think anyone is still reading this. I had a serious moustache overload! But it was so much fun!

Quote Of The Day!

One from Mr. De Win...I mean, Laurence Olivier!

'Have a very good reason for everything you do.'

Monday 20 September 2010

Happy Birthday, Sophia Loren!

Happy birthday to this beautiful woman! Seriously, anyone who can rock a hat this huge deserves an award!

Quote Of The Day!

Where are all the male birthdays? Geez, the women are overruling! One from Sophia Loren!

'Everything you see I owe to spaghetti.'

This is now my motto. I love this! Thank you, Phosie (family joke no-one will understand)!

Quote Of The Day!

All everyone is talking about on Twitter at the moment is, well, Dana Andrews. So here is a clever little one from him. Please quit fighting over Mr. Andrews for one little moment and read it! Ugh, people fighting over men! ;-P

'All people are half actors.'

(By the way, I'm only joking. It's quite entertaining reading all your little (pretend) quarrels!)

An Ode To My Hair!

I know a few people have posted this week about hair, but considering I did only get mine done on Thursday, and my ideas for this post are still fresh in my memory, I'm going to post it anyway!

I'm pretty adventurous with my hair. In my lifetime I've had:

1. The Louise Brooks twice (the first time was when I was only four years old!)

2. The Shirley Temple

3. The, um, Dorothy Gale

4. The Mary Tyler Moore

5. And, most recently, well, um, I can't think of anyone. It was kind of like Audrey's hair in this creepy photo.

But now, after many different styles, I have (drum roll please)...

And it has very quickly become my favourite! It's so cute, and really easy to style! I love looking like (or attempting to look like!) a real 60's mod! So, to pay homage to my new hair, here are a few images of Twiggy looking extra gorgeous!

Though, to complete the look I may need her clothes. And her face, too.

Happy Birthday, Greta Garbo!

Happy birthday to the gorgeous Greta Garbo!

(By the way, I love this hat/scarf/turban-y thing!)

Quote Of The Day!

Another birthday girl, another quote. Thanks, Greta!

'Life would be so wonderful if we only knew what to do with it.'

Friday 17 September 2010

Quote Of The Day!

One from Graciebird!

“I avoid looking back. I prefer good memories to regrets.”

Thursday 16 September 2010

Quote Of The Day!

How's about one from the birthday girl?

'Imagination is the highest kite that can fly.'

Happy Birthday, Lauren Bacall!

Happy birthday to the beautiful, brilliant and amazing Lauren Bacall! I hope you have many wonderful years to come!

(By the way, if you still have this outfit, can I have it? I think I've fallen in love with it! Wait...Lauren Bacall won't be reading this! Then, who am I talking to? Oh gosh, I've gone mad!)

Happy Belated Birthday, Agatha Christie!

I'm fashionably late, I know. Happy birthday to the genius behind Poirot, Marple and the wonderful 'And Then There Were None'. You really must watch it! Or read it!

Wednesday 15 September 2010

Quote Of The Day!

Thanks for your motto Bette. Now I really want Christmas dinner.

'To fulfill a dream, to be allowed to sweat over lonely labour, to be given a chance to create, is the meat and potatoes of life. The money is the gravy.'

5 Great Movies (And 2 Mini-Series!) To Watch When You're Sick!

The thing is, I was sick today, and as I was sick I was sent home from school, and as I was sent home from school I decided to use my free time wisely and catch-up on some movie watching and hopefully find a cure. So, without further ado, here are my 5 great movies (and 2 mini-series) to watch when you're the sick.

The Movies

1.High Society

My lovely mother swears by this movie. She seriously does think it is the answer to everything. And she's right, you know.

2.Rebel Without A Cause

If you're feeling down in the dumps just put this DVD in the player to remind there is always someone out there who is worse off than you. And a little James Dean never did anyone any harm.

3.Duck Soup

Some people believe the answer to sickness is chicken soup. I totally disagree. I think it is Duck Soup!

4.Calamity Jane

Dearest Doris and Handsome Howard-need I say more?!

5.North By Northwest

Don't feel like venturing past your bedroom door? Then don't. Instead watch Archie Leach venture his whole way across America!

The Mini-Series

I am aware that this is a classic movie blog, and these are technically modern series, but I just had to include them!

1. Pride and Prejudice (1995)

Really this is good to watch in any given situation, but especially when you're ill. When does Pride and Prejudice not make you feel better?

2.Little Dorrit

I remember watching this last Boxing Day when I wasn't feeling too good (probably had just eaten too much the day before!), and even before the first episode was over I was feeling as right as rain. So really, you simply must watch this-the story is wonderful and the acting is

So, these are the movies I believe you should watch when you're ill-so check them out!

(Note to self:must stop writing rhetorical questions!)
